The Cost of Selling Without a Real Estate Agent

Aug 14, 2018

Consumer Advertising Campaign - August
The Long Island Board of REALTORS® monthly Consumer Advertising Campaign communicates REALTOR® brand value to consumers. Whether they are home buyers, sellers, owners and investors, we want today’s consumers to understand that REALTORS® have committed their career to helping people find the home of their dreams.

Some homeowners believe they will make more money on the sale of their home if they try to sell it themselves. The latest installment of the campaign, “The Cost of Selling Without a Real Estate Agent,” highlights research that indicates this is not the case.

Sellers that try to sell on their own, average a significantly lower selling price than if they used an agent. According to the National Association of REALTORS® most recent Home Buyers and Sellers study, agent assisted home sales sold for $250,000 and FSBO (For Sale By Owner) homes sold for $190,000. That’s a 24% difference in price, and in our market, sellers could lose thousands of dollars on a transaction (LI Closed Median Home Sales Price reported by MLSLI in June 2018 is $455,000).  The ad urges consumers to talk to a real estate professional who knows the market and can help sell their home faster and for money.
